Entrepreneur Of The Year 2009
Road to Palm Springs

Barry W. Cooper

Cooper Tea Company
Louisville, Colo.

Raised in the tea-growing highlands of Kenya, tea master Barry Cooper has spent a lifetime in the tea industry, making his name in the industry by discovering new sources of quality teas and herbs around the world.

Cooper, who won an award last year for his book Silver Spoons, Mad Baboons, and Other Tales of Tea, spent 24 years as a master taster/blender for Lipton Tea and subsequently served as vice president of research and development at Celestial Seasonings. In 1975, after 10 years at Lipton, Cooper tried to go into business for himself by buying a mail order tea and coffee company. But the company failed soon after its purchase, putting Cooper’s dream on hold until 1992, when he cashed in his 401(k) plan to launch Cooper Tea Company.
