Entrepreneur Christopher Durham had a vision of building a physician company based on a platform of efficiency and sound business practices. Today, the company he started in 2003 with his partner, Dr. Christopher Krubert, is the fourth-largest and fastest-growing company in its industry. A provider of clinical outsourcing services for hospitals in 13 states, the company cares for almost 2.5 million patients a year, including more than 500,000 uninsured patients.

Durham gave up the prospect of a lucrative law career in 1997 to start a business that outsourced emergency room services, starting with a single emergency medicine contract in Cobb County, Ga. Using a fee-for-service model that compensated providers on the basis of performance, he worked out of an office set up in his father-in-law’s dining room.

ApolloMD was formed when Durham met up with Dr. Krubert, who went on the road for years winning new ApolloMD contracts across the country. Along the way, the company expanded its services to include outsourcing for hospitals’ anesthesiology and radiology departments. Since Krubert became CEO in 2006, the company has quadrupled in size, with sales in excess of $2 million. Its business model enables clients to realize a 50% reduction in physician staffing, saving millions of dollars for hospitals and patients.
